ABOUT THE POSITION

Free Forest School, a national 501(c)3 nonprofit since 2017, is seeking a bold, enterprising leader to serve as our new Executive Director and enact our mission of nurturing kids and empowering adults by connecting to nature, culture and each other through outdoor play.

Strong candidates will bring:

  • a passion for the outdoors and a deep appreciation of the importance of unstructured nature play for young children

  • a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice

  • experience with non-profit fundraising and development, or sales and business / relationship development experience

  • strong background in managing projects and taking ideas from strategy to execution

  • experience working in and leading teams, managing staff and volunteers

  • a clear and compelling strategy for achieving the organization's vision

  • the confidence and energy to hit the ground running

As Executive Director, you will be responsible for:

  • leading fundraising efforts to ensure the organization's continued financial sustainability

  • working with the Board of Directors to craft a detailed strategic plan and budget for the coming fiscal year and beyond

  • developing programming that addresses the broad range of circumstances, barriers, and needs faced by caregivers of young children

  • stewarding Our Outdoors, our virtual nature play hub which provides learning and connection for caregivers of young children

  • managing (and recruiting/hiring as needed) top-level employees and volunteers

  • working with the Board of Directors to maintain official records and documents, conduct official correspondence, execute legal documents, and ensure implementation of sound financial practices and compliance with federal, state and local regulations

This is a unique opportunity for someone with passion and background in the outdoor play movement to bring their expertise and vision to a non-profit organization that has connected with over 60,000 families across the US and helped facilitate well over 100,000 kid-in-nature hours nationwide – shaping the organization’s future after a challenging season in the context of a rapidly-expanding interest in outdoor exploration and learning for young children.

Starting out as a part-time position (20 hours per week at $40 per hour), this role will require self-compensation through fundraising, and has the potential to expand to a full-time position. Benefits include incrementally-accrued paid time off and remote work with flexible hours.
